Porcelain vs. Ceramic vs. Natural Stone: What to Choose

Beautiful tile bathroom remodel

Choosing tile is one of the most important decisions in any bathroom remodel. The right tile sets the tone for the entire space — and the wrong choice can mean cracking, staining, or endless maintenance. Here's our practical guide to the three most popular options.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain is our most-recommended material for Seattle bathrooms. It's fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, making it extremely dense and nearly impervious to water.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic is a great budget-friendly option for lower-traffic areas. It's softer than porcelain and absorbs slightly more water, but performs well in most bathroom applications when properly sealed.

Natural Stone

Marble, travertine, slate, and limestone bring unmatched beauty to a bathroom. However, they require more care than manufactured tiles — especially in the wet Pacific Northwest climate.

What We Recommend for Seattle

Given Seattle's moisture-heavy climate, we almost always recommend porcelain for floors and shower walls. For a luxury look, large-format porcelain that mimics marble or stone gives you the beauty without the maintenance headaches.

If you love the look of natural stone, we recommend using it as an accent — a niche, a feature wall, or a decorative border — paired with porcelain in the main wet areas.
